Our Story
1999
17-year-old Joe Poulin founds CaribbeanWay

Designing websites from his parents’ basement in a small town near Montreal, 17-year-old Joe Poulin is approached by a Barbados villa owner interested in a rental website. Joe hops on a plane to Barbados and goes on the trip that sparked the idea of creating a global villa rental platform. That same year Joe founds CaribbeanWay, connecting Caribbean villa rentals with luxury travelers around the world.

2001
CaribbeanWay makes its first million

Just two years after its humble beginnings, CaribbeanWay hits its first $1 million in sales. Catering to discerning sun seekers, CaribbeanWay lists high end vacation rentals from villas to private islands in the Caribbean, Mexico, Central America and Florida.

2002
New global portfolio introduced as Luxury Retreats

Joe launches Luxury Retreats, offering a wider selection of destinations than its Caribbean counterpart. Luxury Retreats includes European destinations and lists luxury villas in Italy, the French Riviera and Greece and more.

JULY 2006
Luxury Retreats acquires homes in Hawaii

Luxury Retreats acquires Maui-based property management company Fabulous Homes, significantly boosting its Hawaiian villa portfolio. With new additions in Maui, Big Island and Oahu, Hawaii quickly becomes a leading destination with Luxury Retreats guests.

Luxury Retreats moves to new headquarters

Luxury Retreats moves its Montreal headquarters into a 100-year-old loft on the Lachine Canal. With brick walls, a private on-site gym and a gourmet restaurant, the new office boasts the square footage Luxury Retreats needs to accommodate the rapidly growing team.

Luxury Retreats acquires St. Martin Villa Specialist Carimo

Luxury Retreats acquires Carimo, the leading villa rental and real estate provider on the Caribbean island of St. Martin. Luxury Retreats had previously worked with the well-respected, 30-year-old villa rental broker. “This is a major milestone for both Carimo and Luxury Retreats,” says Joe Poulin. “Quality properties, quality service, and integrity have always been a big part of Carimo’s DNA. I can’t think of a company that would be a better fit with our brand.”

Luxury Retreats raises $5 Million in capital led by iNovia Capital

INOVIA CAPITAL, a venture capital firm specializing in emerging technology companies. The proceeds are used to strengthen the Company’s balance sheet and provide additional operating capital and financial resources to pursue future growth opportunities.

Joe Poulin wins Ernst & Young’s Entrepreneur of the Year Awards

Luxury Retreats CEO Joe Poulin takes home the prize for the Business-to-Consumer category at Ernst & Young’s annual Entrepreneur of the Year Quebec Awards. “It’s an honor to recognize the talent and accomplishments of our local entrepreneurs,” says Sylvain Vincent, Ernst & Young Managing Partner in Eastern Canada. “Their ability to turn good ideas into great businesses that improve our economy and our communities is something to truly admire.”

Launch of the Home Inspection Program

The Home Inspection Program is a rigorous vetting program which all villas must undergo to qualify as a “Luxury Retreats Standard” in order to be listed for rent. The program is the first of its kind in the vacation rental industry, ensuring a standard of excellence for all of the company’s 2,000 villas, located in more than 50 destinations worldwide. The program has since evolved into our Home Experience department, responsible for coordinating the logistics of home inspections worldwide.

Luxury Retreats raises $11 Million in captial funding by iNovia Capital

By only offering curated homes and focusing on great guest experiences, Luxury Retreats continues to carry out its differentiation strategy in the fully serviced luxury segment of the vacation rental industry.

Located in a historic loft building along Montreal’s Lachine canal and bike path, our head office is an open concept environment, while our remote team members are given the tools to perform from their home offices around the world.

Facilities at headquarters include full fitness equipment, showers and towel service, so that you can keep in shape if you want to. We also support recreational activities like yoga classes, soccer and more.
